A Gala Evening
I had the opportunity last week to attend a gala event benefiting Georgetown Pediatrics.
I wear anything between a 16 and a 20 so it is a bit difficult for me to find dresses at the last minute. I wanted to find something nice on a budget that fit well and would not be too difficult to return if it did not fit or I did not like it. I looked at Nordstrom and Eloquii since I have both nearby for returns. Both sites had very cute dresses, but were not exactly what I was looking for.
Then I remembered that Rent the Runway has some limited plus sizes (18W-22W). They offer some pretty nice brands in these sizes: Badgley Mischka, Amanda Uprichard, Yoana Baraschi, ML Monique Lhuillier, and Christian Siriano among others. I filtered by my sizes and by the date I needed the dress. I ordered a fab short Badgley Mischka and a long black Amanda Uprichard (seen below). The short dress was $100 and I was getting it in a 20W (no second size was available in this dress). There was a special offer to get a second dress for $32.50 and that is why I got the long black dress as well.
I also ordered accessories. A Kendra Scott necklace and earrings for the black dress called out to me. I have a pink Rebecca Minkoff bag that I carried to another event that I knew would be perfect with this jewelry.
I was scheduled to get the dresses on the Thursday before the event on Saturday when I got an email on Wednesday afternoon. First, one of the black dresses was returned without the belt so they would send another dress to me. I was asked to send them a list of 5 dresses with sizes (in order of preference) and they would send the extra dress for free. I got some help from my friends to pick more dresses and sent off the email. While I was offline, I received several more emails about my dresses. The other size of the black dress and the short dress were not in acceptable shape to send to me so they would send a few more from the alternative list I sent.
I was worried. I have a strange shape – thin legs, thick waist, large chest. I can’t just slip on any dress and have it look good on me.
I went to try on my dresses at the Georgetown store. I was sweating right away. Would any of these dresses fit? Would any of the ones that fit look nice? Would I have to start shopping again for this event?
I surprised myself. I made some great choices for those alternative dresses. I loved two of them, but this black Badgley Mischka was so perfect.
It made me look like I had a waist and showed off my shoulders and back. It was perfect. Sure, I had to run out and get a low back bra to wear it (shout out to Dor-Ne Corset Shop), but it was so worth it.
These are the shoes I ordered from Amazon.
And this was the makeup, featuring The Queen by Charlotte Tilbury, and the earrings I ordered. I did not wear the necklace.
And here are some pics of the full look.
So despite my worry, I looked and felt great. I would highly recommend Rent the Runway for a special event. They really put in a huge effort to make sure I had a lot of choices and that I looked good for the event.
